Several months ago, Aussie star Paul Hogan was being hounded by the tax department for alleged naughtiness in the area of tax. It is a delicious irony that just a few years earlier, Hogan was the star of "Strange Bedfellows", a movie which featured two straight blokes, from country Australia, who decide to pretend to be a same-sex couple in order to trick the tax department into giving them concessions to which they are not really entitled.
Nothing in this article should be intended to support the veracity or inaccuracies of the tax departments allegations - I know absolutely nothing about the facts. All I know is that the hit Aussie movie has now been turned into a musical theatre piece, and I was lucky enough to have been asked to write the music for the show.
"Strange Bedfellows - A New Musical" opens this week in Albury. Starring John Wood (brilliant actor - and everybody's favourite), Peter Cousens (music theatre start par excellence) and Colette Mann (wonderful comedian and performer), the musical will also feature many of Albury's best musical theatre stars. Melissa Langton, who is a fantastic singer and a great performer, will play the role of Vonny, and the very talented Jennifer Robinson will take on the role of Carla.
It's very exciting to be writing music for the world of musical theatre - Dean Murphy and Jon Stephens have put together a very funny script (known as the "book"), and Stephens has come up with some great lyrics. It will be fascinating to see how audiences react!
